With in the field I’m studying in, I’ve always restricted myself to researching 2D images. But I found another medium to pull inspiration from, which are the forms of videos. Music has always been a second passion to design, and on my free time I like finding new bands to listen to. While filtering through new bands, I also filter through music videos. The standard music video consist of the artist singing to the camera, with some kind of cheesy love story line and a few live performance clips spliced in. But I’ve complied a list of 9 videos I find visually appealing and interesting. Check out my list under the cut.
1. La Roux – Bullet Proof
Director: Les Holograms
With the use of 3D geometrical shapes, and interesting texture and patterns, La Roux’s video for Bullet Proof makes a visually stimulating statement. The video fits the style of the artist and song, and it’s retro with some modern flair.
2. Grizzly Bear – Ready, Able
Director: Allison Schulnik
Second to the list is Grizzly Bear’s video for Ready, Able. It’s just plain weird. But it’s one of those videos where you’re unable to look away. Great use of stop motion and abstract imagery. I’ve read a lot of interpretations of the music video, but with me I just felt sad after watching the video. I didn’t know what to think. A wonderful music video, nonetheless.
3. Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out
Director: Jonas Odell
A old video, but still wonderful. Graphically charged with some interesting vintage imagery. Perfect blend of 2D and 3D shapes. Catchy song as well.
4. Justice – Dance
Director: So Me
Absolutely love the concept of the video. This video has interesting use of typography and graphics. I wish I could get some of those prints!
5. Kanye West – The Good Life
Director: So Me
As much of a douche Kanye West is, he has a sense of wonderful design. His videos are always breaking the norm and are just rad. This video is just one of his interesting videos. Great illustrations.
6. Kid CuDi – Day n Nite
Director: So Me
Oh look another So Me directed video. This video takes the concept of the song and portrays it in the video. Some creepy imagery by the use of illustration within the video.
7. Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Our Hell
Director: Jaron Albertin
Just haunting. The video captures the emotion of the song with some eerie imagery.
8. Girl Talk – Bounce
Director: Fan Made!
This video is fan made! They took the intensity of a Girl Talk show and spliced it together and animated it. Definitely different, but amazing.
9. Justice – DVNO
Director: So Me
Lastly is another So Me directed video. This guy is a beast! Just wonderful typography and illustrations.
So there it is! My 9 chosen videos. If I’m missing any videos, leave them in the comments!
